FAQs
Sound Design / FX Packages
The Basics
What is sound design?
Sound design is the craft of building audio worlds from scratch. At Hundred Hand Slap it covers everything from radio imaging FX packages and podcast episode soundscapes, to sonic world building for advertising and social content. We combine digital FX creation, foley recording, and atmospheric composition to make sound that doesn't just sit in the background but actively shapes how your audience feels. Whether it's a single sting or an entire sonic universe, great sound design is what separates memorable audio from forgettable noise.
What's the difference between sound design and music composition?
Music composition creates the melodic and harmonic elements of your audio identity. Sound design fills everything else in. It's the whoosh, the impact, the atmospheric texture, the punctuation that makes a sweeper hit harder or a podcast feel cinematic. The two work best together, and we do both, often on the same project.
What We Create
What kind of sound design projects do you work on?
All of them. Our work spans bespoke FX packages for radio stations, episodic soundscapes for podcasts, sonic world building for advertising campaigns, and custom sound design for social content. We can deliver a complete FX suite for a station rebrand, individual pieces for a specific show or campaign, or ongoing packages that keep your sound fresh. If it needs designing from the ground up, we can build it.
Do you create FX packages for radio?
Yes, and it's where our sound design roots are deepest. We've created imaging FX packages for some of the biggest stations in the UK, building everything from format specific impact sets and breakers, to glitch and texture libraries and custom transition sounds. Our packages are designed to be immediately usable and built around your station's format, energy, and identity. We can deliver a one off bespoke package or work with you on a rolling update service.
Do you create sound design for podcasts?
Absolutely. Podcasts live and die by their audio world. We create episode level soundscapes, intro and outro design, ambient atmospheres, transitional elements, and full sonic identities for podcast productions. We've worked on internationally distributed shows and understand what it takes to make a podcast sound like a proper production rather than a recording in a room.
Do you create sound design for advertising and social content?
Yes. Brands increasingly understand that sound is as important as visuals when it comes to connecting with an audience, and we help them get it right. From sonic world building for advertising campaigns to punchy, format optimised sound design for social content, we create audio that makes your brand feel distinctive and consistent wherever it's heard.
Can you work with our existing audio assets or do you start from scratch?
Both. If you have an existing sonic identity you want us to build around or extend, we can work within that framework. If you're starting from nothing, even better. We love the blank canvas. Either way the process starts with understanding your brand, your audience, and the world you want your sound to live in.
Working With Us
How do you approach a sound design brief?
We start by understanding the context. What format is this for? What's the energy, the tone, the audience? From there we develop a creative direction, share references, and agree on a sound palette before anything is built. Once we're in production you'll hear work in progress at key stages, and revisions are built into the process. Nothing goes to air until it's right.
How much does sound design cost?
It depends entirely on the scope. A single custom FX piece sits in very different territory to a full station imaging FX library or an episodic podcast soundscape series. We work with clients across all budgets and will always be clear about costs before any work begins. The best starting point is a conversation. Get in touch and tell us what you're building.
How do I get started?
Just reach out. Tell us what you're working on, what you need it to do, and what you've got to work with. We'll take it from there.
