Event Audio:
Radio 1's Big Weekend
BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend is one of the biggest events in the UK music calendar. When the festival came to Norwich in 2015, Radio 1 wanted something that went beyond standard imaging. The brief was to create a piece of audio that would capture the scale and excitement of the event, something bold enough to open the weekend, soundtrack the station, and genuinely stop listeners in their tracks.
The answer was the Big Weekend Mashup. Thirty four artists. Fifty tracks. One seamless piece of audio built entirely to celebrate Big Weekend in Norwich.
This was 2015. No AI, no stem separation technology, no shortcuts. HHS founder Matt Fisher crafted every edit, every blend, and every transition by hand, using raw audio files and sheer technical skill. Over 100 hours of production time went into a single piece of work. The result was something that sounded effortless, because the effort was invisible.
The mashup became the foundation for the entire weekend's sound. It opened the event, spawned the full radio imaging package for the coverage, and took on a life of its own when it landed on air, becoming track of the week on Radio 1 and racking up millions of combined views across iPlayer, YouTube, and Facebook.
It is exactly the kind of work that demonstrates what great audio can do when the thinking is as ambitious as the execution. The judges agreed. Matt took Gold for Best Editing at the New York Radio Festival Awards.
